Altitude Sickness and Prevention– Tips for Safe High-Altitude Treks

Altitude Sickness and Prevention

Altitude sickness, or Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), can affect travelers trekking above 2,500 meters. Common symptoms include headache, nausea, fatigue, and dizziness. Severe cases may lead to High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) or High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), which require immediate evacuation. Prevention is better than cure: ascend gradually, drink plenty of water, and take rest days to acclimatize. Avoid alcohol and smoking, and consider preventive medication like Diamox after consulting a doctor. Always inform your guide or team if symptoms arise, and never ignore the warning signs. With the right precautions, most trekkers can safely enjoy Nepal’s high-altitude beauty.
