Kailash Tour takes you to the remote and mystical west of Tibet, where the legendary Mount Kailash rises majestically to a height of 6,714 meters. This revered peak, untouched and unclimbed, holds immense religious significance and spiritual power. Mount Kailash has long been considered sacred by followers of four major religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and the Bon tradition. Its striking appearance and isolated location in the Trans-Himalayas make it one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in Asia.
For Hindus, Mount Kailash is believed to be the eternal abode of Lord Shiva, the god of destruction and transformation. Shiva is said to meditate at the summit, seated in stillness with his consort Parvati, radiating energy and divine presence. Tibetan Buddhists revere the mountain as the residence of the fierce deity Chakrasamvara (Samvara), who plays a central role in Tantric Buddhism. According to ancient beliefs, performing a Kora (circumambulation) around the mountain cleanses the soul and brings spiritual merit.
The Bon religion, which predates Buddhism in Tibet, holds that Mount Kailash is the nine-storey Swastika Mountain, the axis mundi or spiritual center of the universe. It is said that the Bon founder, Tonpa Shenrab Miwoche, descended here from the heavens and spread his teachings across the land. In Jainism, the mountain is known as Mount Ashtapada, where the first Tirthankara, Rishabhadeva, attained liberation.
One of the most important aspects of the Kailash Tour is the Kailash Parikrama or circumambulation — a 53-kilometer circuit around the base of the mountain. This journey is both physically demanding and spiritually transformative. Pilgrims believe that a single circuit can absolve a lifetime of sins, while completing 108 circuits is said to lead to ultimate liberation. The journey usually takes three days to complete and involves trekking across high mountain passes, including the challenging Dolma La Pass at 5,630 meters.
Another highlight of the tour is the visit to Lake Manasarovar, located at an altitude of 4,580 meters. This pristine freshwater lake lies just south of Mount Kailash and is one of the highest lakes in the world. In Hindu mythology, it is believed that Lord Brahma created the lake with his mind, hence the name “Manasarovar” – ‘Manas’ meaning mind and ‘Sarovar’ meaning lake. Pilgrims bathe in the lake’s holy waters and drink from it, believing that it cleanses the body and soul, purifying the sins of a hundred lifetimes. Nearby lies the mysterious Rakshasa Taal (Lake of Demons), which is associated with the demon king Ravana and is considered the opposite of the divine Manasarovar.
Our crew member will embark on a pilgrimage with you to the holy land of Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar for eight days, starting from Kathmandu. The tour starts when we cross the border to Tibet, exploring and making our way to the Holy Mount Kailash. We explore the Holy Mount Kailash and the sacred surroundings. Some major sites we visit during this tour are Mount Kailash, Lake Mansarovar, Rakshasa Taal, and more.
